Project Description

When discussing indoor air quality, one of the most important issues concerns formaldehyde in wood-based panels and related products. An issue that directly affects designers, installers and end users of raised flooring systems.

What is formaldehyde and why are people talking about it?

Formaldehyde is a chemical compound found naturally in wood, many organic materials and even some foods. Its presence is therefore not unusual: the problem arises when concentrations in indoor environments exceed certain thresholds, with potential effects on the health of those who live in or use those spaces.

In raised flooring panels with a chipboard core, such as the JVP 4×4 C-Series range, formaldehyde is present both naturally in the wood and as a component of the binding resins used in their manufacture. For this reason, European legislation has historically established emission classes that manufacturers must comply with.

European Regulation 2023/1464: what’s changing

Under the Regulation 2023/1464 of the European Commission, the maximum formaldehyde emission limits have been significantly reduced. The new limit has been set at 0.062 mg/m³ (equivalent to 0.05 ppm), effectively halving the previous Class E1 limit of 0.124 mg/m³.

This new class, known as E05, will become the mandatory reference standard for manufacturers and distributors of wood-based panels from August 2026. This is a significant change that is requiring many companies in the sector to review their production processes, formulations and raw material sourcing.

JVP’s response: anticipating change rather than reacting to it

For JVP, compliance with the new limits was never a race against time. Health and sustainability are values deeply rooted in our company culture, reflected in concrete decisions taken long before regulations require them.

From 5 June 2026, 60 days ahead of the official deadline, JVP will produce exclusively JVP 4×4 C-series panels compliant with Class E05. A decision taken to ensure, from the outset, the highest level of safety for those working with these products and for the end users of the spaces in which they are installed.

What does E05 mean for users of JVP 4×4 panels?

Choosing JVP 4×4 C-Series panels today means choosing a product that already goes beyond the standards the market will eventually be required to meet. This means operating in environments where formaldehyde emissions are half those permitted under the previous E1 class, in full compliance with the latest indoor air quality regulations.

For designers and installers, this translates into an additional guarantee they can offer their clients.
For businesses operating in projects subject to environmental certification schemes such as LEED, BREEAM or CAM, E05 compliance represents a tangible added value in the project’s assessment.

A step forward, not the finish line
